Things to Consider When Buying a Water Ionizer
When you’re in the market for a new water ionizer, the amount of information you’re presented with could be overwhelming. What’s ORP, what pH range is the best? How many plates should my water ionizer have?
These are all questions you should seek to answer before making your purchase. With this in mind, this section of the guide was created to help you understand all the things you should consider when buying a water ionizer.
Keep reading to find out all about pH ranges, the ORP range, and more valuable information.
pH stands for potential hydrogen.
The pH range of your water ionizer is the different levels of acidity that a water ionizer can turn water into. The entire scale range from 0 to 14. However, most water ionizers will only create water between 3 and 12.
The lower the pH score, the more acidic it is. On the other hand, the higher the pH level the less acidic it is. A pH level of 7 is considered neutral water.
Acidic water isn’t typically used for drinking, as it can be damaging to humans to consume. However, it has many commercial uses. Everyone from scientists to hairdressers and skin enthusiasts will use acidic water for skin treatments and even research.
When looking to purchase a water ionizer, note what you’re going to do with the water. If you’re only looking for water that’s suitable for drinking, you won’t care so much if an ionizer has many options for acidic water.
The ORP Range, or the oxidation-reduction potential, is a measurement that tells you the degree that a substance is capable of oxidizing. In other words, it’s how well it can reduce another substance. It’s measured in millivolts using an ORP meter.
In general, the lower the pH, the higher the ORP will be on your water. You’ll find that both alkaline and acidic water has ORP values. These values may even be negative. If you find a negative ORP level, this indicates that it’s an anti-oxidizing agent, rather than an oxidizing agent.
Typically, you’ll find an ORP level for spas and pools between 650 and 50 mV. However, expect this number to be much higher when it comes to clean drinking water.
Number of Plates
In general, you want between 5 to 7 water ionizer plates in your water ionizer. The more plates, the better. That’s why you’ll see so many high-quality water ionizers boasting a total of 7 plates used.
In general, the number of plates will affect how long the machine works and how powerful it is. However, while 7 plates are the most common amount associated with most water ionizers, it’s possible to have 9 plates, 11 plates, 13 plates, and even 15 plates.
A total of 9 plates will vastly outperform 7 without sacrificing much in terms of a price point. 11 plates are a great buy and run almost the same as 13, but don’t quite match them. If you’re considering a 15 plate water ionizer, it’s simply too much. These are big and bulky machines that will cause you more problems than the benefits associated with them. Another important thing to consider is the type of plates you should be considering when purchasing a water ionizer.
GRID plates allow for better performance if you’re using a lot of hard water. These plates are dropped-forged and ideal for the toughest scenarios and toughest water you can find. When compared to flat or MESH plates, you should always go for GRID plates if you’re interested in the best reliability and durability.
MESH is the most efficient type of plate you’ll find in the world of water ionizers. This is because it allows the most direction of electrical flow and also provides more surface area to come into contact with water. On the downside, they don’t have a method of being able to continuously clean the plate. Because of this, it’s recommended that you combine mesh plates with a continuous cleaning system for the best results.
FLAT plates are the least valuable of any of the types of plates. This is because these are simple, standard flat plates. They don’t offer any benefits beyond getting the job done.
These are found with lower-end water ionizers. They have no texture and are simply a titanium plate with a platinum coat on it. These are best if you do not need additional benefits.
Slotted plates were seen as a step above the standard solid plates, the most common type of plate. Slotted plates allow for an electrical current to have a direction and improves ionization. It’s one of the more efficient options.
Built-In Water Filter
Built-in water filters are something you should keep in mind when considering your purchase. These are useful filters that can help a lot in dealing with water pressure. If you own a well or use well water, a built-in water filter can be integral to managing the amount of water pressure that comes with well water.
It should also be noted that built-in water filters cost a bit more than other standard filters and will generally only last between six and 12 months. Take this into consideration before making your purchase.
UV light disinfection is always a bonus to have with not just a water ionizer – it’s great for almost every product that can affect your health. UV light works to obliterate cysts, mold, bacteria, and viruses found within your water by using short-wavelength ultraviolet light. It’s an approved disinfection process and has been recognized by the FDA. If you want an extra layer of protection in your ionized water, make sure to be on the lookout for UV light additions.
The installation of your water ionizer is an important consideration to ensure you’re going to get the most out of your purchase. Some things you should think about include if you use well water if you have hard water, and the quality of the source of your water. In total, there are three types of installation you can consider: convertible, countertop, and under counter water ionizers.
Convertible, Counter Top or Under Counter?
Countertop installations are by far the easiest way to install and use your water ionizer. These sit right next to your sink and can connect straight to your faucet.
Undercounter installations are ideal if you don’t want your water ionizer to cluttering your counter. For this method, you’ll need a small dedicated faucet that’s been mounted at the sink. It’s recommended you have a professional plumber do this installation, although it’s possible to do on your own if you’re a handy person.
Convertible water ionizers are the best of both worlds. They’re able to be switched back and forth between the countertop and under-counter setups. These are ideal if you want a water ionizer but aren’t sure how your set up will be in the future. Get these to make sure you’re prepared no matter how your situation ends up.
Warranties are always a benefit to have with a product. Most people see warranties as an added benefit and don’t pay much attention to them. This should never be done as a warranty can tell you so much about a product. What a warranty is telling you is how long a manufacturer is comfortable telling you their product will work for. In other words, the longer a warranty, the longer you can expect your water ionizer to last.
Many manufacturers offer 5-year warranties. These are robust machines, but a longer-lasting warranty is better if you’d like the peace of mind for how long your product will last.
Water Ionizer Installation and Maintenance
Water ionizer installation and maintenance may seem like a hassle, but it’s not as difficult as you may imagine. If you’re wondering how to install your water ionizer and the proper maintenance you’ll owe it throughout its life, keeping reading.
Countertop installation is the easiest way to install your water ionizer. You’ll need several items, this includes:
- Basic tools
- A valve
- A 2-way diverter
These items can all be found from your local hardware store.
Once you’ve gathered your tools, you need to shut down your tap water. In most cases, you’ll be able to find a valve to turn it off located underneath your sink.
After shutting off your tap water, simply disconnect your faucet’s flexible hose from your tap water cold line. This is where you’ll install the 2-way diverter. Connect your flexible tube from your water ionizer to this 2-way diverter after it’s installed and you’ll be all finished. If you want, you can install a pre-filter system as well.
Under-sink installations are a little bit more complex and may require professional help. However, it’s possible to do on your own if you know your way around the sink and a toolbox. To install your water ionizer underneath your sink, start by turning off your cold-water valve found underneath your sink and remove the tubing. You can disconnect the water line from the shutoff valve by simply finding the attached nut and loosening it and then removing the tube afterward. You’ll need a basin wrench to do this.
From here, position your water ionizer on the cabinet wall as close as you can to the cold water line. You can mark your location by using holes in the mounting bracket. Drive screws into the marks about halfway in. You’ll tighten them after the ionizer is put in place.
After this has been done, it’s time to start making the connections with your plumbing. Connect the filter by using flexible stainless-steel supply lines, otherwise known as flex lines. You could also use plastic tubing that comes with most installation kits. After you’ve made all the connections required, you’ll put up your water ionizer and tighten it into place.
Make sure you’ve made snug connections and then slowly turn the water supply back on. Make sure to release any trapped air and look for leaks once the water has been turned back on.
Maintaining Your Water Ionizer
Maintaining your water ionizer is a combination of making sure it’s regularly cleaned and the filters are promptly replaced when it’s time. Most filters will last between six and 12 months, although some will be good for long if you’re not regularly using your water ionizer. For the most part, this is a simple step that only takes a few minutes. This is especially true if your water ionizer has a front-loaded cartridge system.
You should also regularly clean the inside of your water ionizer with a cleaning cartridge or the manufacturer recommended cleaning protocols. Of course, you should also be wiping down the exterior of your water ionizer whenever it gets wet or dirty, this will help it look like new all the time while ensuring that corrosion doesn’t occur over time.
